What is barre?

Ballet-inspired strength.

Barre – sometimes called barre Pilates or barre fitness – is a full-body workout that blends Pilates, ballet and strength training. Using the ballet barre for support, you work through small, controlled movements and holds that target specific muscle groups – sculpting arms, legs, glutes and core.

It's low impact but high intensity: low resistance, high reps and that famous barre shake. Classes combine standing work at the barre with mat exercises, and every move can be adapted to suit you.

  • The barreGives you support for balance, so you can focus on the muscles you're working.
  • Small movementsTiny pulses and holds that fire up muscles you didn't know you had.
  • Light weights & bandsAdd just enough resistance to sculpt arms, legs and glutes.
  • The matA core-focused finish on the mat to round off every class.

Book a barre class
Are your barre classes suitable for beginners and adults of all ages?

Yes. Our barre classes are for adults of every age and fitness level, including complete beginners. Every move has options to make it easier or harder, and with no more than nine people per class your instructor will help you find the right level.

Do I need any dance experience?

Not at all. Barre borrows positions from ballet, but there's no choreography to learn and no dance skills needed – just follow your instructor's cues.

What's the difference between barre and Pilates?

Barre blends Pilates with ballet-inspired moves and light strength training, mostly standing at the barre with high reps and small pulses. Mat Pilates is slower and more focused on core control, breath and alignment. They complement each other really well – and one Matwork pass covers both. See our mat Pilates classes →

Can I do barre and yoga with the same pass?

Yes. Barre, mat Pilates and yoga all use the same Matwork pass, and the Pilates, Yoga & Barre membership gives you unlimited classes across all three for £70 a month – so it's easy to mix barre with yoga or mat Pilates in the same week.

Where are barre classes held?

All barre classes run at our Horley Row studio – 5 South Parade, Horley Row, Horley, RH6 8BH – with free parking right outside. It's just minutes from Crawley, Reigate, Redhill and Gatwick. Getting to Horley Row →

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable clothes you can move in, a bottle of water and a pair of grip socks. Grip socks help you feel steady at the barre – if you haven't got any, you can pick up a pair when you arrive. Weights, bands and mats are all provided.

How many people are in a class?

Up to nine, so you get plenty of guidance from your instructor.

How much does barre cost?

A single class is £13, or less with a 5 or 10 class pass. The Pilates, Yoga & Barre membership is £70 a month for unlimited mat classes, and new customers can try 3 classes for £24 – see our pricing.

I have an injury – can I do barre?

Barre is low impact, but please tell us about any injury or health condition on your health questionnaire and let your instructor know before class. If you'd like one-to-one attention, our private sessions are tailored entirely to you.
